Article: Review of Antara Multimedia Guide to Indian Music
The CD "Antara" is designed to lead to appreciation of Indian classical
music. It very effectively uses aesthetically appealing icons of the
original miniatures. The presentation, thus enhanced, grips you and
invites you to repeat your visits.
Antara comprises three hours of video, consisting of illustrations,
animations and demos with commentaries. The CD has a provision for
listening to shruti-s (microtones), using glissando from one note to
another. The CD also exposes you to various taal-s, enticing you to play
the game of of recognizing those taal-s. It also has incorporated a music
lesson in the traditional style.
Coming to music proper, Antara has in store for you, three hours of clips
of music recordings by well known artists like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and
Shruti Sadolikai Sadolikar. The tracks incluse twenty clips by
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (Sarod), the same number of vocal tracks by
Shruti Sadolikar,Vrinda Mundkar, Murli Manohar Shukla, and
Raghunandan Panshikar. Other instrumental tracks include Shahanai,
Santoor, Sitar, Veena, Harmonium and Sarangi.
If you want to explore and browse the CD, you can go to various sections
like musicians, gharanas, origin and development of Indian music, India
and the West etc. The number of raga-s dealt with is twenty. Their aroha,
avaroha, vadi, samvadi, time and rasa have been listed out.
We do wish the number of raga-s included in the CD was larger!
Antara CD is a good, attractive multimedia introduction to Indian
classical music, covering many topics of relevance and interest. Maia
media and Culture should be commended for the production value of Antara.
